Convocation Speaker

Michael V. O'Brien

City Manager Worcester, Massachusetts

Michael V. O’Brien was appointed City Manager of Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2004. The overarching theme of his administration has been to preserve, protect, and enhance the quality of life for all residents and resident businesses in Worcester. New England’s second-largest city is now rated one of the safest communities of its size in the country and is experiencing more than $2.4 billion in economic development activity.

Mr. O’Brien has been credited with creating an environment within Worcester that is conducive to both business and residential activity. During his tenure, Mr. O’Brien has worked tirelessly to support well-priced middle-class housing, economically and socially diverse neighborhoods, a strong existing infrastructure including road and rail connections, and an urban public school system second to none.

Under Mr. O’Brien’s leadership, Worcester is in the midst of one of the most aggressive economic development agendas in the Commonwealth today. Major construction projects include the $563 million CitySquare development in downtown, a $23 million DCU Center renovation, and a multi-million-dollar Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) campus expansion. A new $11 million Worcester Regional Transit Authority headquarters in Washington Square complements the area as the region’s inter-modal transportation center, with daily Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail service to Boston and Amtrak service to Albany, Chicago, and New York City. Recently, Mr. O’Brien was instrumental in bringing JetBlue Airways to the Worcester Regional Airport.

Mr. O’Brien also continues to invest in the city’s intellectual capital. With more than thirteen colleges and universities within Greater Worcester, a young, educated workforce is a significant component of the community. Under his direction, the city works closely with the Colleges of Worcester Consortium in offering a wide array of academic and social resources for its students.

Recently, Mr. O’Brien launched an effort to make Worcester the healthiest city in New England by 2020. Working with public health officials, he instituted a comprehensive community health improvement plan to benefit the health of residents in Worcester and its suburbs. In addition, he has been instrumental in raising funds for Worcester Public School programs and to benefit community and educational efforts. His passion to help others has reached beyond city boundaries through his “Worcester Cares” campaigns. In 2010, he led community-wide efforts to help victims of the Haiti earthquake and tornadoes in Western Massachusetts.

Mr. O’Brien has worked for the city of Worcester since 1994. He was named the Commissioner of the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Department in 1997. Mr. O’Brien received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in September 1988. He and his wife, Beata, reside in Worcester with their two daughters, Katherine and Michaela.
