Shiva Mendonca '16, Game Development and Programming
Major: Interactive Media Game Development and Programming
I am from India by heritage, but I have never lived there. I was born in Oman and have lived my whole life in the Middle East. Currently, I live in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
What are your favorite things to do?
I like playing video games–my favorites are “The Devil May Cry” series, the “F.E.A.R.” series, “TimeShift,” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.” I also enjoy having a good laugh with friends, reading, playing squash, and biking.
What are your talents?
I love to create things and am fairly good at it. It started with LEGOs when I was young. Today I use that talent in map editing for various games. I also have a very good memory.
How did you choose Becker?
Google! That’s what I tell everyone when they ask me this question on a tour (I am a tour guide at Becker College admissions), and it makes them laugh every time. When I searched “best gaming colleges in the US”, The Princeton Review list showed up, and I liked Becker’s site, its courses, and atmosphere (small college, nice campuses) the most.
What career are you planning for?
Right now my intention is to become a level/map designer, but my ultimate goal is to own my own gaming company or work for some of the big industry names like DICE, Treyarch, or Riot Games.
What do you like to listen to?
My favorite genre of music is metal, although I listen to a multitude of other things on occasion. My favorite bands would be Memphis May Fire, The Color Morale, For All Those Sleeping, and Breaking Benjamin.
What do you like to read?
I tend to only read fiction. Anything with magic, dragons, angels, or demons tends to catch my attention the quickest. My favorite books would be The Inheritance series, by Christopher Paolini, The Belgariad/Mallorean series, by David Eddings, and The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy, by Terry Brooks.
Where have you traveled?
England, Switzerland, Seychelles, India, Canada, and the United States.
Describe your experience living on campus.
Living on campus has been absolutely wonderful. The students in my residence hall are awesome. Everything is close by, and I like sharing a room with someone who sleeps as late as I do.
Describe your classroom experience.
For one, the professors at Becker actually care whether you pass or fail, and so they try their best to help you do well during the year. Also, the classroom environment often inspires thinking outside the box instead of just a linear thought process, as is the case in most high schools (or mine, at least).
What do you like best about Becker?
Everything! I just love it here so much. But the best thing would have to be my friends. Never before have I been around so many people who share the same interests as me and who have a similar sense of humor.
