Driving for Excellence, Becker Golf Tourney a Success

With a shot gun start, 150 golfers – eager to test their skills – fanned out across The Haven Country Club in Boylston on a recent summer morning.  They were there for the game, the camaraderie, and the sportsmanship. Most of all, though, they were there for a common cause – to help provide students with the opportunity for a great education.  They were there for Becker College’s 25th Annual Llew Evans Golf Tournament.

“The fact that they are here supporting Becker and, most of all, supporting our students, that’s really the most important thing,” said Becker president Nancy Crimmin Ed.D.

The event, held in June, raises funds for the Llew Evans Scholarship which is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence. This year, more than 57 corporate sponsors from around the Worcester area got behind that effort.

“It’s our obligation as members of our community to take care of our own,” said Anthony Salvidio, a partner at the law firm Fletcher Tilton. “Becker does a wonderful job of enriching our community, so every dollar we give back here goes to someone in our community and it pays dividends for all of us.”

But the tournament is about more than just raising funds; it is also about honoring and preserving the legacy of the man whose name it bears – D. Llewelyn Evans.

Evans was a beloved journalism teacher who devoted his career to helping and pushing his student to discover and reach their potential. He joined the Becker staff in 1912 and continued to inspire them until his death in 1966.

“These donations they will help a student who deserves it get to where they want to be – to achieve that goal that they’ve set for themselves,” said Nikolas Nasby, this year’s Beaudoin Scholar, the top Llew Evans Scholarship recipient.

Twenty-eight deserving students were awarded the scholarship this year.

Since its inception in 1985, approximately 350 students have received the award, which was established by Evans’ former students of the class of 1935 as a tribute to him.
