Worcester is becoming a hub for gaming, with Becker College leading the way.
According to an article in The Pulse magazine, “To find the nexus of …gaming creativity in Worcester you need to turn your attention to Becker College.”
As the story notes, Becker College’s game design program is ranked number 2 in the world by The Princeton Review, while the College’s Master of Fine Arts in Interactive Media is ranked number 10.
“We have created a gaming ecosystem here at Becker where students design, compete, and manage video games and esports, said Alan Ritacco, Ph.D., dean of Becker College’s School of Design & Technology.
Becker College offers a number of esports-related programs, including the country’s first-ever Esports Management degree. In addition, the College has a highly competitive varsity esports program, as well as esports club programs. Becker students compete in games such as League of Legends, Overwatch, Smite, Super Smash Bros. and many more.
The Massachusetts Digital Games Institute (MassDiGI) at Becker College is also highlighted in the article. MassDiGI works with students and faculty all over the world, as well as with startups and established studios, and different levels of government, to help grow the sector in the region.
MassDiGIis located at the Colleen C. Barrett Center on the College’s Worcester Campus, but its reach spans the globe, with offerings that include the Summer Innovation Program, where students work to conceptualize, create, and market games. The program draws hundreds of applicants from colleges as far away as Europe and Asia, and as close at the Becker campus.
“It’s exciting to see how games and game culture are impacting Worcester,” said Timothy Loew, executive director of MassDiGI. “We can’t wait to see where we can go from here.”
Worcester is also home to a variety of game-related cars and cafes, several of which are highlighted in the story. They include both arcade bars and esports bars, where gaming fans can play and compete.
