Esports team competes in Overwatch Championship playoffs
Published on: July 13, 2020
The Becker College varsity esports team competed in the Tespa Overwatch Collegiate National Championship playoffs that began on Saturday.
Becker’s squad was one of only 64 to earn a seed in the playoffs, out of an original 612 teams that kicked off the competition during the fall season. Teams played in a best-of-five-game, single-elimination style on the GameBattles platform.
Becker fell to Purdue University Boilermakers in first-round play on July 11, according to Tim Loew, Becker Varsity Esports Program general manager.
Tespa originally postponed the season due to COVID-19, and while the esports tournament resumed online, an in-person finals event will not be taking place. The Tespa Overwatch Collegiate Championship prize pool is valued at $91,000 in scholarships.
