There is an increased demand for college-educated child specialists. The number of employment opportunities for workers with specialized knowledge of early childhood and youth care and education in southern New England is projected to grow by 14.2% with a high demand in the Boston, Providence, and Worcester areas.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood and Youth Education will enable students to prepare for growing career opportunities with young children from infancy to age fourteen and out-of-school time. Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care has developed a system based on the knowledge and skills that are necessary to be effective in working with children and youth. The National Child Care Information Center (NCCIC) defines these skills as, “the range of knowledge and observable skills that adults working with young children need to facilitate child learning and development, linked to early learning guidelines,” (

The program includes the eight areas of competence that are addressed in the Massachusetts core competencies for early education and out-of-school time educators. The curriculum will include coursework in:

  • child development;
  • guiding and interacting with children and youth;
  • partnering with families and community;
  • health, safety and nutrition;
  • learning environments and curriculum;
  • observation, assessment, and documentation;
  • program planning and development; and
  • professionalism and leadership.

Classes will be offered on campus, online, and as a hybrid. On campus classes meet one night per week, which is ideal for students who are presently working in the field.

Learning Outcomes

As defined by the Department of Early Education and Care, students will meet the following Core Competencies:

  • Understanding the growth and development of children and youth
  • Guiding and interacting with children and youth
  • Understanding the roles of families and communities
  • Ensuring the health, safety and nutrition of children
  • Understanding the characteristics of high quality learning environments and curriculum
  • Using observation, assessment and documentation to meet the individual learning needs of children
  • Understanding the importance of relationships and positive communication among colleagues
  • Knowing and adhering to ethical guidelines and professional standards

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be qualified to pursue such career paths as infant/toddler teacher, early intervention specialist, preschool teacher, family support specialist, youth, child, or family advocates, home-based services provider, parent advocate/mentor, after school program director, parent-child enrichment program leader, director of youth and family programming, camp director, child care center worker, and coach.

Admissions Requirements

The Center for Accelerated and Professional Studies offers a rolling admission process; applications are accepted throughout the year.

Requirements include:

  • Completed signed application
  • Prior college credit(s) earned > copy of official college transcript(s) required
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED required
  • Assessment testing may be required
