Hawks Clipped by Leopards

Men’s Basketball – Wentworth defeats Becker 70-64
Leicester, MA – Becker junior guard Travis Suber (Springfield, MA) tallied a game high 23 points but the Hawks couldn’t hold the lead down the stretch as Wentworth defeated Becker 70-64 at the Leicester gymnasium. Wentworth improves their record to 2-1 as Becker dips to 1-3 to start the season.
Suber’s points came on 9-19 shooting from the floor, 2-5 from behind the three point arc and 3-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Kevin Miranda (Brockton, MA) scored 17 and Daniel Christensen (East Windsor, CT) had eight rebounds to help pace Becker.
Wentworth was led by senior guard Sherrad Prezzie-Blue (Norwalk, CT) who had 22 points and Shane West (Saco, ME) with 9 rebounds and 10 points. Matt Abbott (Falmouth, MA) had 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.
It was a tight game throughout the first half with the teams tied 9-9 at the 13:40 mark. Wentworth went on a 15-5 run to push the score to 24-14 on a three pointer from Pat LaCasse (Rochester, NH) with a little more than 7 minutes left in the half. Becker then turned up the defense and capitalized on a Gill Ward (Mystic, CT) turnover and a steal by Suber who went in untouched for his first of two dunks on the night. This sparked a 15-8 run for Becker who went into the half trailing by three 32-29.
Early in the second half, Becker took a 35-34 lead on Suber’s second dunk of the day and took its largest lead (55-48) of the game on a three pointer by Miranda with 9:55 left to play. Over the next two minutes the Hawks’ lead disappeared as West hit a free throw and a jumper and Matt Abbott hit consecutive baskets to tie the game at 55. Becker took a four point lead when Drew Schroll (Portland, CT) hit a three pointer with 5:03 to play.
Wentworth battled back and on a three pointer by Prezzie-Blue at the 2:08 mark the Leopards had the final lead of the night 65-64. The Leopards would hit their free throws to seal the victory 70-64
Becker returns to action on Thursday November 29th as they travel down Route 56 to face Anna Maria College at 7:30pm. Wentworth travels to the University of New England on Saturday December 1st for a 1:00pm game.
