Women’s Basketball - MCLA defeats Becker 82-71
Leicester, MA – Junior guard Larissa Miner (Greenfield, MA) and freshman guard Jessica Tietgens (Stamford, VT) each scored a team high 18 points as visiting Massachusetts College defeated Becker College 82-71 in women’s basketball. MCLA improves their record to 2-2 and Becker dips to 0-3 to open the season.
The teams traded baskets for the opening ten minutes of the game. MCLA built a six point lead 24-18 when Tietgens had a layup off a Becker miss with 8:20 remaining in the period. Becker tied the game at 24 on a three point shot by Kristin Karat (Enfield, CT), a jumper by Rachel Pinak (Cheektowaga, NY) and a free throw by Brittany Evans (Danielson, CT). MCLA then went on a 19-8 run over the last 6:49 of the first half. MCLA center Laura Silverman (Clifton Park, NY) scored seven points down the stretch to take a 43-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Becker started off the second stanza with a quick jumper by Pinak to get the difference under ten but MCLA tightened up their defense and caused five Becker turnovers over the next four minutes to build their lead to 21 points 60-39 at the 14:54 mark. Becker went on a 28-12 run to cut the lead down to 5 with a minute and a half left but MCLA hit their free throws down the stretch to make the final 82-71.
For MCLA Silverman finished with a game high 10 rebounds and 15 points.
Evans finished with a game high 20 points and six rebounds and Karat added 16 points for Becker.
Becker returns to action on Thursday November 29th as they travel down route 56 to face Anna Maria College at 5:30pm
