Hawks Highlights - November 5th

Men’s Ice Hockey- The Hawks hosted the 2nd Annual Dunkin’ Donuts Cup on November 2 and 3rd. The tournament featured Framingham State College, Nichols College, Assumption College and Becker College. Game one of the day featured Framingham State vs. Nichols College. Nichols scored four shorthanded goals en route to a 6-4 win. In the nightcap Becker faced Assumption, an NCAA Division II team. The Hawks came out of the gates flying. Sophomore Kevin Switek (Philadelphia, PA) scored the first goal of the season when he converted a pass from Matt Oster (Stillwater, MN) and Mike Caprio (Valencia, CA) for a power play goal at the 15:22 mark of the first period. Then Oster and Caprio each picked up power play goals for a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Freshman Anthony Libonati (McMinnville, OR) and Mark Persic (Allison Park, PA) each scored their first collegiate goals in the game to give Becker a 6-2 win. Freshman Tony Stoehr (DePere, WI) had 39 saves in his college debut for the win. The win was the first win for head coach Steve Hoar at Becker.

In the title game Becker faced off against Nichols College. Nichols took a quick two goal lead before the Hawks had their first shot on net. Once the Hawks settled down they got things going when freshman Robert Higgins (Grandville, MI) scored a shorthanded goal at 11:44 of the first period. With just 37 seconds left in the first period Persic scored for the Hawks and a 2-2 game going into the first intermission. Nichols scored two power play goals in the second period making it a 4-2 game going into the final stanza. Becker mounted a valiant comeback effort; Switek scored his second of the season at 12:13 of the 3rd period to make it a 5-3 game. Hawks forward Libonati tucked the puck in the net with less than three minutes left to make it a one goal game. Becker pulled their goaltender Stoehr, who had 30 saves in the loss, for the last two minutes but couldn’t convert. In the consolation game Assumption scores with less than three minutes remaining to defeat Framingham State 4-3.
 
Anthony Libonati and Tony Stoehr were named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
The Hawks return to action when they entertain UMass – Dartmouth on Saturday November 10th @ 2:15 pm @ the New England Sports Center.
 
Volleyball - The Lady Hawks season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Lesley University in the first round of the NAC Tournament. Diane Hoefner (El Paso, TX) had 17 digs and Kelsea Laubenstein (Randolph, MA) had 17 assists to lead the Hawks. The Hawks finished the season with a 10-16 (4-4) record. Laubenstein broke the Becker College Assist record for a season with 450 assists. The old record was 431 by Jamie Wollschleager in 1999. Junior co-captain Rachel Pinak (Cheektowaga, NY) became Becker’s All-Time Career Leader in Kills (695), Blocks (140), and Digs (739). The records were previously held by current Hawks coach and alum Chelsea Clyburn Morehouse. Senior co-captain Kelly Rossitto (Meriden, CT) received an Honorable Mention selection to the NAC All-Conference Team.
 
Men’s Soccer- The Hawks hosted the North Atlantic Conference semifinals versus Husson College on Wednesday, October 31st.  Becker fell to the Eagles 2-0 in the tournament game. The teams played a scoreless first half but Husson grabbed a 1-0 lead on a direct kick tip in past Hawks goaltender Aaron Fill (Ladner, BC) in the 62nd minute. Husson would double the lead 18 minutes later for the win. Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, MA) and Jared Silva (Freetown, MA) were named to the NAC All-Tournament Team. Under the first year tutelage of Taskin Guven the team set the school record for wins in a season with 15 and best NAC record at 6-2. The Hawks snagged the eighth seed in the upcoming ECAC tournament; they will travel to Norwich for a 1:00pm tilt.
 
Football- The Hawks completed their 2-7 season with a 46-20 loss to Husson College on Saturday 11/3. Husson took a commanding 40-7 lead before Becker answered with two touchdowns. Gabriel Prophet (Washington, DC) found Jakar Turner (FY, Hollywood, FL) down the middle for a 38 yard touchdown pass. The Hawks covered 63 yards on 5 plays. On Husson’s next drive, they fumbled on the second play from scrimmage and Jamari Hawkins (SO, Orlando, FL) returned it 65 yards for the touchdown cutting the lead to 40-20. Prophet completed 13-37 for 150 yards one touchdown and 4 interceptions. Levi Smith (FY, Fort Lauderdale, FL) finished with 4 catches for 26 yards while running pace D’Andre Stringer (FY, Hollywood, FL) had 48 yards on 8 carries. Defensively Thierry Raphael (JR, Lynn, MA) had a big day with 16 solo tackles (16.5 total).
