Hawks Highlights 9/5
The Becker Hawks fall athletic season opened on Saturday, September 1st. The Hawks batted .500 with men’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball picking up their first wins of the season. Here is a recap of the past weekends play.
Football: Becker (0-1) opened the season on the road last weekend at Utica College (1-0). The Hawks dropped a 41-22 decision to the Pioneers. The Hawks were down by only 5 points 27-22 in the fourth quarter…Utica scored two touchdowns in the last four minutes of regulation…Rookie quarterback Gabriel Prophet (Washington, DC) threw for 256 yards on 22 of 48 completions. He also ran for a team high 69 yards and one touchdown…Junior wide receiver Acie Johnson (Lynn, MA) returned a 55 yard punt for a touchdown…Paul Pascarella (New Canaan, CT) had a 24 yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Field Hockey: The Lady Hawks fell to Clark University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Clark in the season opener for both teams…Junior goaltender Ciara Lawrence (Costa Mesa, CA) made 13 saves in the loss…Forward Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, PA) scored her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game…Back in action on Tuesday afternoon for their home opener the Hawks did not disappoint the home crowd. They walked away with a 3-0 win over Regis College…Lawrence had her first shutout of the season and evened her record at 1-1…Mullen notched her second goal in as many games and dished out two assists, she also had nine shots on goal…Alison Thompson (Barre, VT) and Kristal Swiderski (Warren, MA) also found the back of the net.
Women’s Soccer: Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Faunce (Fairhaven, MA) had 16 saves in net but the Lady the Hawks fell 5-0 to Bard College in the season opener for both teams. Raechel Hammond (Springfield, VT) and Kim Pino (North Attleboro, MA) led the team in shots on net.
Men’s Soccer: Head Coach Taskin Guven picked up his first collegiate win on Saturday afternoon when Becker won 2-1 at Bard College…Rookie Samuel Adjel (Worcester, MA) scored at the 24th minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, Bard tied the game six minutes later…Freshman forward Ali Samura (Milton, MA) broke the tie with his first collegiate strike, an unassisted goal in the 81st minute.
Volleyball: The Lady Hawks were the only show in town last weekend as they played a thrilling 5 set season opening win over Bard College. Becker was down 2-1, came back to win set 4, 30-22. In the fifth set the Hawks were down 12-6 and rallied to win 19-17…Newly named co-captain Kelly Rossitto (Meriden, CT) led the team with 18 digs…Freshman setter Kelsea Laubenstein (Randolph, MA) had 25 assists…Katelyn Kane (Rutland, MA) had 9 kills.
Women’s Tennis: The defending 2006 North Atlantic Conference Champions went 1-1 over the weekend. Allison Flynn (Wilmington, MA), the reining NAC Player of the Year, led the Hawks to a 5-4 win over Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. Catie Sivert (Stow, MA) , Colleen Murphy (Lyme, CT), Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, CT) and the doubles team of Murphy/Stryker were also winners. The team dropped and 1-8 decision to Nichols, the Murphy/Stryker doubles team took the only point.
