The Accuplacer Test

Accuplacer is an adaptive assessment test that specifically tests an individual’s skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. “Adaptive” means that the test will start with a question of moderate difficulty and depending on the answer of the student, right or wrong, will adapt a level of questioning for that student. More specifically it means that the test takers will virtually never take the same test. A room full of 25 freshmen taking the placement test at the same time will not experience the same test.

During the mathematics portion of the testing, a pop-up calculator may appear for certain questions. Use of the calculator will only be helpful if the student understands the formula necessary to solve the problem. The only calculator allowed will be what pops up during testing.

Taking the Accuplacer Test

The test is administered via computer and does not require significant computer skills by the test taker. The test is un-timed and presents 17 – 20 questions for each area being tested. The essay component (Writeplacer) allows a student up to 1 hour to write on a subject presented at the time of the assessment.

Answering the Questions

Since the test is computerized and adaptive, students answer fewer questions that on a traditional paper-pencil test. One question appears on the screen at a time. When an answer is selected and you continue, another question appears. Most questions are multiple choice.

Guessing

As an adaptive test, questions are ‘chosen’ for you on the basis of your previous answers. It is therefore important to answer every question as you go along. You will not be able to skip questions and go back later to answer.

Scoring

Once you have completed all the sections and close the test, your scores are instantly calculated. You will receive a printed copy of your scores following the completion of testing.

What to take to the Test

Be sure to bring a photo ID and your social security number. You might want to bring pencils or pens in the event that you want to try to get an answer on scratch paper that will be provided.

What NOT to take to the Test

Textbooks, notebooks, dictionaries, calculators, or other papers of any kind are NOT allowed in the testing room. Further, anyone who gives or receives help from another test taker during testing will not be permitted to continue. Cell phones, handhelds, and other devices must be turned off and put away during testing.

Tips

  • Be relaxed. The placement test is designed to help the college plan the most suitable academic plan for you. Your academic strengths and weaknesses are identified in order to appropriately place you in course work that is at your skill level. It is all about helping you succeed.
  • It is important to get enough rest the night before and to eat properly before coming to test.
  • Test administrator/proctor will be available to assist with any questions.

Accuplacer Scores from another College

Students who have taken the Accuplacer within three (3) years at another college or university may submit those test scores and not retest. If you feel that your skills have improved and that you could perform better, it is up to the student if s/he would like to retest. Scores must be sent directly to the admissions office by the college or university where the test was administered. Test scores may be faxed to the Office of Admissions at 508-890-1500.
