Campus Police Officer Training Program
The Becker College Campus Police Department is dedicated to providing our community with the best possible quality of officer. We at Becker College recognize that one of the most important ways to accomplish this task is through dedicated, consistent, and continual training. The Becker College Campus Police Department determines its training needs based on legal mandates, court decisions, federal and state standards, current law enforcement trends, directives from the Campus Police Chief, and most of all the observed and implied needs of the college community. The Becker College Campus Police Department receives its training through a variety of programs. The bulk of this training is conducted through programs of certification offered by the Municipal Police Training Committee (formerly Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council) as well as the Massachusetts State Police Academy at New Braintree, Massachusetts. In addition Becker College also employs on its staff officers who maintain certification as instructors in several relevant areas.
New Officer Orientation
All new officers participate in a field training program before being assigned to full-time patrol duties. This program includes familiarization with the Becker College community, review and recognition of department rules, regulations, policies and procedures, department report forms, reporting requirements, local law enforcement agencies, community services and interaction, use of force continuum, safe and effective use of firearms, as well as patrol function basics.
Departmental In-Service Training
Each year every member of the Becker College Campus Police Department receives a minimum, mandatory forty (40) hours of in-service training, relative to the effective performance of the required duties present at the college. This is a requirement that is imposed by the Becker College Campus Police Department, in excess of the state mandated requirements. In addition several officers have taken the initiative to surpass the required minimum training program by taking part in programs of specialized study offered by both the Massachusetts State Police Training Facility located at New Braintree Massachusetts, as well as the Municipal Police Training Committee (formerly the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council) located at Boylston, Massachusetts.
