Recently there has been a slight increase in the larceny of property from several Becker College offices. Items from laptops to purses have been taken without the knowledge of the owners and have caused an influx of calls for service in the area of larcenies. We in the Campus Police Department have been working with other agencies outside, as well as multiple departments inside the college to attempt to address and prevent these thefts. In order to best combat these issues it is important to recruit those people who are most often equipped to take preventative actions to stop this trend. Those people are YOU! Please remember the following things when thinking about your personal safety and property security.

·         Keep your office doors and windows locked when you aren’t around. Even a simple trip to the restroom provides the opportunity that a “would be thief” needs to make you a victim. If your locks are missing or damaged, contact the Maintenance Department to get them replaced or repaired. Especially remember windows that are on the first floor.

·         Don’t leave your keys lying around. A small oversight can end up costing you prized possessions from expensive gifts to your motor vehicle.

·         Make sure to take your valuables with you when you leave. Although it may be “easier” just to leave your wallet, purse, laptop or other items, the effort and cost associated with replacing them will far outway your slight  inconvenience.

·         Use walkways and park in areas that are well lit. If you have concerns with lighting  issues feel free to advise the Maintenance Department in order to have them addressed.

·         If you must have valuables at the college use the services provided to attempt to protect them. The Campus Police Department offers Automobile Etching, Laptop Safety programs, Operation Identification, Safety Escorts and a wide variety of other programs designed specifically to help keep you and your property safe and in most cases they are actually free to you.

·         Report things that don’t seem right. If your gut tells you that someone in an area doesn’t feel correct, report it. Sometimes a simple odd feeling from a caller leads to the help that officers from various agencies have been looking for all month long.

These items are just a few simple ways that your efforts can help to keep you and your coworkers safe and protected. Although the Campus Police Department works around the clock to provide the safest and most secure learning and working environment possible, we always count on each of you to help us. Thank you for your efforts in aiding us to do all that we can to keep Becker College safe.
