Mel Mills takes over at the helm of the second year football program for Becker College, replacing the departed Dave Dunn. Mills spent last season as the assistant coach and defensive coordinator for Becker. Last year the Hawks finished 0-8 in their inaugural season. Mills’ coaching experience includes seasons with Deerfield High School (Fla.), Cologne Centurions (NFL Europe) and Florida Atlantic University (Division 1A, Fla.).
Athletic Director Craig Barnett says “Not only does Coach Mills have a wealth of coaching experience but he played a very big role last season as head assistant coach with recruiting our inaugural class and building the foundation of our program as it stands today. Thus, this transition will be a very smooth one. Our student-athletes already know what his expectations are and won’t miss a beat.”
When coaching his athletes he stresses the RUN & HIT factor. Respect Unity No-nonsense & Honesty Intensity Tenacity. Mills uses each element when describing the expectations of his players on the field, in the classroom, and in life. As the head coach he is just trying to listen to his assistant coaches, trying to enjoy the moment and not be so intense at times that you forget that you make a living coaching a game. The whole goal of the team is to work with young men to make them better young men in making decisions in their life experiences.
Graduating from college and being the first one in his family to do so is one of Mel’s personal accomplishments. Mel also acknowledges his eight uncles as his mentors while growing up as well as being surrounded by his family contributed to his success. Looking forward to season two Mills recognizes that last year was the foundation of the team as he looks to bring in some excellent support players to build upon the groundwork.
Mills, who resides in Worcester, Mass hold a Bachelor of Science in police administration from the University of Louisville (1992). He served as captain in 1991 and was part of the Louisville Cardinals team that upset Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl that year. Mills also played two seasons with the Cincinnati Rockers of Arena Football.
Recently Mills was featured in a Boston Globe article on being the only African-American head college football coach in New England.
