For the second year behind the plate for the Becker Hawks baseball team will be Head Coach Mike Coonan. Coach Coonan led his 2006 squad to a 15 win season and had four players selected to the All-NAC team. Mike has almost 10 years of college coaching experience under his belt. He spent four years as the assistant baseball coach at Anna Maria College and then four years as the assistant coach at Becker before being named head coach. Coonan as an assistant coach help lead the Hawks to a 23 win season and a birth in the North Atlantic Conference tournament in 2005 and the team also boasted the 2005 NAC Rookie of the Year.
Joining Coonan in the dugout again this season will be his dad, Ed Coonan. Mike recognizes his dad contribution to his success. Ed taught him a lot about coaching baseball, life and being a good role model.
As a player Coonan worked hard as a catcher doing whatever was needed from him to help the team win. Be it catching on your scheduled day off or warming up the bullpen pitchers. That mentality will carry over to the field where Mike will stress to his players that he will always be there to do the extra things to make them better players and people. If the need extra batting practice, hitting ground balls, or just sitting down to talk – he’ll be there for them. Mike would like to build his team based on his favorite team the New England Patriots, “They are my favorite team not because they have won championships but because they are truly a TEAM. They are true role models for today’s society and are what all teams should strive to be.”
Mike grew up in Grafton, Mass and player varsity ball at Grafton High School. He continued to play ball as he backboned the St. Leo’s University Lions for two seasons. The Lions made the regional tournament in 1996.
