Hawks Rally Past Eagles

Worcester, Ma. 4/17/08- The Hawks rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Daniel Webster 9-8. Dan Briand (Northbridge, Ma.) got the comeback started in the 6th with his first homerun of the season. The Hawks kept the rally going when Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL.) followed a Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, Ri.) single with an RBI double, putting the Hawks within three. After Ceglarek stole 3rd base, Errick Maddern (West Haven, Ct) had a sacrifice fly, shortening the Daniel Webster lead to just two.

The score would stay the same until the bottom of the 7th when the Hawks would take the lead for good. Ryan Mercado (New London, Ct) led off the inning with a triple down the leftfield line. Roger Graham (Dracut, Ma.) singled through the left side of the infield, putting the Hawks within one. Dan Briand completed the Hawks rally with a single to right field, tying the game a six. With two outs, Geoff Sinnott tripled down the leftfield line, giving the Hawks their first lead of the day 7-6. Jim Ceglarek then sealed the victory for the Hawks by blasting a homerun to deep centerfield, putting the Hawks ahead for good.

Daniel Webster made in close in the 9th, but Ryan Mercado settled down to earn hit first win of the season. Mercado didn’t allow an earned run in three innings of relief. The Hawks improved their record to 5-16 on the year.  Jim Ceglarek led the Hawks offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Becker finished the day with 14 hits.

 

Hawks Soar Past Rivier

Worcester, Ma. 4/15/08- Chris Reilly (Lexington, Ma.) went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, to help lead the Hawks to a 9-6 victory over Rivier College.

Rivier jumped out to an early lead when Franco Pisano led off the game with a double down the leftfield line. John McMahon then singled up the middle, giving the Raiders their only lead of the game. The Hawks answered back in the bottom half of the first. Roger Graham (Dracut, Ma.) led off the game with single to centerfield. After the Raiders committed back to back errors, Dan Briand (Northbridge, Ma.) singled through the right side of the infield, tying the game at one. The Hawks would add two more runs in the inning on a Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, Ri.) RBIsingle.

In the fourth inning the Hawks had two costly errors by their outfield, allowing Rivier to tie the score at four. The score would stay the same until the bottom of the fifth, when Becker broke the game open. Frank Vaccaro (Shrewsbury, Ma.) walked with the bases loaded, putting the Hawks ahead for good. Chris Reilly gave the Hawks some breathing room with a two run double to leftfield. With the Hawks up 7-4, Zaccarie Putis (Charlton, Ma.) drove in two more runs with his first Colligate hit.

Errick Maddern (West Haven, Ct.) allowed one earned run on eleven hits in six and third innings pitched, to earn his first colligate win.

 

Robinson's Homerun Lifts Hawks

Paxton, MA 4/10/08- The Hawks came from behind to defeat Anna Maria 15-6, for their third win of the season.

The Hawks were down 3-2 going into the top of the 5th inning before their bats exploded. With the bases loaded, Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, RI) had a bases clearing triple, putting the Hawks ahead by two. Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL) then had a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Sinnott, tying the game at 6.

The Hawks would go ahead for good when Kevin Robinson (Pittsfield, MA) hit a three run homerun, putting the game out of reach for the AMCats. Robinson went 2 for 4 on the day with 4 RBI’s. Karrone Stanley (West Haven, CT) went 5 for 5, reaching base 6 times, raising his average .111 points. Dan Briand (Northbridge, MA) added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s to help pace the offensive attack. The Hawks finished the day with 18 hits.

 The pitching staff was led by Kurt Tholen (Goshen, CT), who earned his 2nd win of the season. Ryan Mercado (New London, CT) allowed just one hit over the final 3 and 2/3 innings, to seal the win for the Hawks.

 

Hawks Split With Ramapo

 Lake Mary, Fl 3/15/08- In his first start of the season, Kurt Tholen (Goshen, CT) led the Hawks to a 4-2 victory. The Hawks got things started when Dan Briand (Northbridge, MA) led off the 2nd inning with a double into the left centerfield gap. After a Frank Vaccaro (Shrewsbury, MA) single, Karrone Stanley (West Haven, CT) singled to left center, putting the Hawks on the board. Jario Valdez (Lynn, MA) kept the inning going with a double, scoring Vaccaro, putting the Hawks up 2-0.

Ramapo would make the score 2-1 before the Hawks bats came alive again in the 4th. Jario Valdez started the inning with his 2nd double of the game. Roger Graham then singled down the right field line scoring Valdez, putting the Hawks up for good. Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL) added an insurance run with an RBI single, scoring Graham.

Kurt Tholen was solid on the mound for the Hawks. The sophomore pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits, to earn his first win at Becker College. Jario Valdez led the Hawks offense with three hits.

The Hawks will head north with a 2-7 record.

 

Hawks Rally Past Calumet
Kissimmee Fl. 3/11/08- The Hawks rallied from an 8-4 deficit to defeat Calumet College 11-9, to earn Mike Sarno his first win as head coach at Becker College. Calumet took a 8-6 lead into the top of the seventh, before LJ Blomgren (West Haven, CT) chose an opportunistic time to get his first collegiate hit. After  Frank Vaccaro (shrewsbury, MA) hit a one out double, Blomgren drove a triple into the leftfield gap to put the Hawks within one. Jario Valdez (Lynn, MA) kept the rally going by singling up the middle to tie the score at eight all. Calumet elected to intentionally walk the bases loaded after Roger Graham (Dracut, MA) and Valdez successfully executed a double steal. With the bases loaded Kevin Robinson (Pittsfield, MA) was hit by a pitch, allowing Valdez to score, putting the Hawks up 9-8. After going 0-4 in his previous at bats, Ryan Mercado (New London, CT) turned his day around with a single through the left side scoring two runs, putting the Hawks up for good.

The Hawks pitching staff was led by Aaron Sayad (Chicago, IL) who allowed four runs on three hits, in five innings of work, to earn the win. Errick Maddren (West Haven, CT) got the final two outs of the game, to earn his first save of the season.

Roger Graham reached base five times upping his batting average to a team best .444. Frank Vaccaro, Dan Briand (Northbridge, MA) and Jairo Valdez had multiple hits to help pace the Hawks offense.

 

 

Hawks Fall To New Jersey City
Leesburg FL. 3/9/08-Jim Ceglarek (Chicago, IL) got the Hawks off on the right foot after he took a full count curveball over the right centerfield fence for his first homerun of the season. Errick Maddern (West Haven, CT) took the Hawks into the fifth inning with a 3-1 lead only to see it slip away. Rob Sumner (Union, NJ) got things started for New Jersey when he took a Maddren pitch over the leftfield wall to put the Knights within one. After a costly error and a walk, Alex Mena (North Bergen, NJ) singled to left to tie the score at three all.
Becker would respond in the top of the sixth when Kevin Robinson (Pittsfield, MA.) led off the inning by doubling down the leftfield line. Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, RI) then stepped to the plate with one out and delivered a single just out of the reach of the third baseman to put the Hawks up 4-3. The Hawks defense had two costly errors in the bottom half of the inning forfeiting their lead back to New Jersey for good.
Freshmen pitcher Errick Maddern was outstanding on the mound, allowing just one earned run over six strong innings of work. Kevin Robinson led the Hawks offense with three hits. Geoff Sinnott and Roger Graham (Dracut, MA.) added two hits apiece. Graham also had two RBI’s in the losing effort.
