Human-Subjects Research

Becker College faculty and staff must consult with the Dean of Institutional Research before conducting research with human subjects.

As defined by federal regulations, research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.

Human subject means a living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains

(1) Data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or
(2) Identifiable private information.

If a project falls within these definitions and is funded by the government the researcher is required by law to submit a proposal to a legally constituted Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Exempted studies and non-federally funded studies must adhere to the ethical standards of the researcher’s profession or academic discipline.
