Graphic Design Students' Work on USA Gymnastics, Presidential Inauguration
When the USA Gymnastics Eastern Championship was in need of a new logo, Kathy Ostberg,USA Gymnastics national administrative committee chairman, and Paul McCarthy of Gigueres Gymnastics (pictured left) turned to graphic design students at Becker College.
Designs by students Max Denning, Andrew Hyland and Katelyn Putelis (pictured left) were considered, and Hyland’s designs were ultimately selected. His logo design can be seen on the USA Gymnastics 2011 Junior Olympic Level 9 Eastern Championships website for the event, to be held May 5-8 at the DCU Center in Worcester. The logo will also appear in print, on apparel and on other merchandise.
Becker President Robert E. Johnson turns the spotlight on the work and service done by students, so it was a perfect fit when Creative Services Manager Judith Tonelli-Brown suggested that graphic design students be involved in the design of materials for the presidential inauguration, to be held on September 16, 2011.
Seniors Amanda Altena and Amy Straube, as well as Max Denning, Andrew Hyland and Katelyn Putelis, participated in the inauguration design project, and components of Katelyn’s and Max’s design concepts will be used in the final inaugural design. Part of Katelyn’s design was also incorporated into a logo for the Center for Integrated Teaching in Higher Education, an institute to be launched at Becker in the coming months.
“This is a very talented group of Graphic Design students and I am extremely proud of the hard work and professionalism they exhibited working on these projects,” said Dawn Ward, Ph.D., Professor Graphic Design & Visual Art. “I also want to thank both sponsors, Becker College and USA Gymnastics Eastern Championships, for extending these ‘real world opportunities’ that are invaluable to our students in their growth as Graphic Design professionals.”
