Calipari Headlines Golf Classic: Former UMass coach lends his name and time to benefit Hawks men's basketball

Becker College basketball head coach Brian Gorman coordinated the Becker College Basketball Golf Classic on August 19, at Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston Mass. Former University of Massachusetts basketball head coach John Calipari headlined the tournament, the first of its kind at Becker to attract celebrity attention in support of an athletics program. A total of 99 golfers spent the day on the scenic course to support the Hawks. (At left are Brian Gorman, John Calipari, and Derek Kellogg, l-r)

At UMass and at the University of Memphis, Coach Calipari has maintained a winning high of nearly 75% of games played. He is also dedicated to guiding players toward receiving their diplomas and achieving success in their chosen professions.
A cocktail reception with Coach Calipari followed the golf tournament. The new head coach of UMass basketball Derek Kellogg, joined Calipari. James "Bruiser" Flint, head coach of Drexel University basketball and former UMass basketball head coach was slated to participate, but was not able to attend.

Gorman previously served on Calipari’s UMass staff and Flint’s Drexel staff. At Becker, the focus and determination Gorman learned from his mentors (including Becker’s former head coach Bob Vartanian; Gorman graduated from Becker in 1983) helped him lead a team of mostly freshmen to a 13-14 record, garnering him the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors for 2008.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Becker College Men’s Basketball Program. (At right, pictured l-r, are Paul Torpey, John Calipari, Becker Athletic Director Frank Millerick, Derek Kellogg, and Brian Gorman, auctioning a trip to the November 17 UMass vs. Memphis game.)
