On August 24, Becker College welcomed its freshman class at its New Student Convocation. The ceremony, which took place in the gymnasium on the College’s Leicester Campus, is an annual tradition marking the official start of the academic year and new students’ journeys as Becker Hawks.

Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D., president of Becker College, delivered the welcome to students, addressing them to draw upon four key components during their college experience: commitment, accountability, perfect effort and passion. President Johnson emphasized that the students do not have to be perfect during their time at Becker; they just had to give a perfect effort. “Figure out what it is that you’re willing to work hard for and don’t let anyone steal your dream,” he said. “You will get knocked down, but you have to have enough passion in your belly to get back up and not give up. Wake up every day and live your passion.”

President Johnson spoke to a packed audience of new and returning students; this is the second year of record enrollment at Becker College. More than 2,000 students arrived on campus for the fall semester, which began on August 25.

“We’re very glad you’re here,” said Kevin M.R. Mayne, vice president of enrollment management and global strategies at Becker. Mayne said that out of 4,000 applications, of which less than half were accepted, the nearly 600 students in the room represented the strongest class academically based on their GPAs and SAT scores, as well as the largest class enrollment Becker has seen in its 230-year history. Along with returning students and students enrolled in its Accelerated division, Becker College’s overall enrollment is also its largest ever. “In addition to an expanded U.S. representation of students, you’ve come to us from as far as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, China, Japan, Bermuda, Columbia and Canada,” he said.

Not only is the Class of 2018 an historical class by the numbers, but for the second consecutive year, the freshman class honored an historic traditional by adopting a class slogan (“Today we follow, tomorrow we lead”), class colors (purple and gold), and the wearing of freshmen “beanies” as was done by Becker students in the College’s early years.

“The next event in which the entire Class of 2018 will be together that requires a cap will be your graduation,” said David Cordeiro ’15, Student Government Association president. “When times get tough, let the beanie remind you of your journey so far. Not everyone gets to go to college, so whatever you do here, make it count.”

President Johnson rounded out the ceremony by welcoming the students and asking them to repeat the following phrase three times: “If I can see it, if I can believe it, I can achieve it.”

Following the New Student Convocation, a barbecue and activities fair was held at the Campus Center to welcome the students.
