Becker College Scholarship Golf Tournament Exceeds Expectations
Becker College’s 23rd annual Llew Evans Scholarship Golf Tournament fundraiser, held on Monday, September 28, exceeded expectations, surpassing the previous year’s success by raising more than $120,000, and selling out three weeks prior to the event. The annual tournament, first established in 1985 by former students of Llew Evans, a much-beloved faculty member who served the college in a variety of capacities, is a tribute to Evans and his belief in the value of student scholarships.
Golf committee co-chair Mary DeFeudis, who serves on the college’s Board of Trustees and devotes her time to philanthropic and volunteer interests that benefit children, cancer research, and revitalizing the Central Massachusetts community, sponsored a $25,000 Challenge Match for the event. The match encouraged a 13% increase over last year’s net proceeds and a net gain of more than $70,000 to fund the Scholarship Fund and the newly created Internship Fund, both of which benefit Becker College students.
“We are indebted to Mary DeFeudis, whose work on behalf of the college for this event has helped us to provide scholarships for our students who might otherwise not be able to attend college,” said Becker College President Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D. “Everyone who played in this tournament is a winner. Their participation helps us to educate young people who will be the leaders of tomorrow.”
The annual event was held at The Haven Country Club in Boylston, and 136 golfers participated. The First Place Net prize went to Sonoma Restaurant (Princeton, Mass.). The First Place Gross prize went to WB Mason.
The tournament’s lead sponsors were: The Becker College Alumni Association, Fallon Health, the Peter J. Rowden family, Schwartz Charitable Foundation, WinnDevelopment, the Arthur P. (Jay) DiGeronimo family, Benefit Development Group, Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services, Fidelity Bank, Fletcher Tilton PC, and Morgan Stanley.
