Becker College Names Robert E. Johnson as 10th President
The Becker College Board of Trustees have voted to appoint Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D. as the tenth president of Becker College. The appointment comes after a seven month national search that identified a number of talented candidates who were considered by the Search Committee, the Board of Trustees and the internal and external Becker College communities.
“Through extensive dialogue over the past several months, Dr. Johnson has developed a solid appreciation of Becker – our history, culture, strengths, challenges, and opportunities,” said Arthur “Jay” DiGeronimo, Jr., chair of the Becker College Board of Trustees. “The Trustees are confident that Dr. Johnson, with his excellent leadership qualities, experience, energy, and commitment to our mission, will be an outstanding President.”
“I am committed to advancing Becker’s mission of providing quality programs in unique, high-demand career niches to a diverse student population,” said Dr. Johnson. “I am excited about engaging the entire College community in efforts to enhance Becker’s reputation as a provider of exceptional learning experiences for career-oriented students.” Dr. Johnson will be visiting campus on several occasions before he assumes his full-time duties in early summer.
Described as an outstanding leader and educator, Dr. Johnson has nearly 25 years experience in higher education. He has served as Senior Vice President of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio since 2006. Sinclair is widely acclaimed as one of the finest community colleges in the nation for its high quality delivery of career-oriented education. In his role at Sinclair, Dr. Johnson has been responsible for leading the internal operations of the institution, which include strategic enrollment management, three satellite campus centers, strategic marketing and planning, web services, student services, all community partnerships with school districts, and regional partnership development.
“Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has built a successful track record of engaging faculty, staff, and students to develop and support academic programs with growing enrollments, good accrediting relationships, and solid financial results,” said Frances E. Polito, chair of the President Search Committee. “He has also been a visible and valued member of each institution’s development and fundraising efforts, with significant experience raising funds from foundations, government agencies, and other external sources.”
Dr. Johnson graduated from Morehouse College in 1982 with a degree in economics, received his master’s degree in education administration from the University of Cincinnati in 1990, and his Ph.D. in higher education administration in 2007 from TUI University. His career in higher education began as executive director for admissions, marketing and enrollment management at Central State University in Ohio. He progressed to vice provost at Oakland University in Michigan, then vice president for enrollment management at the University of Dayton.
“We would like to thank Dr. Joseph Bascuas for his excellent guidance as our interim President since the fall of 2008,” said Mr. DiGeronimo. “Dr. Bascuas arrived at Becker at a most difficult and trying time. His decisions and initiatives stabilized the College and made us all more confident about Becker’s future. During his stewardship, we have benefitted significantly from his experience, knowledge, and steady hand.
“We wish also to express our sincere thanks to former trustee and alumna, Fran Polito, chair of the President Search Committee who in this process moved beyond conventional, expected responsibilities to participate so fully in the entire process. We have benefitted greatly from Fran’s complete commitment to Becker College.”
