In recognition of Becker College, College of the Holy Cross, and Worcester State University receiving Tree Campus USA® distinction this year, the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota teamed up to hold a tree-planting event today with local college students and community members. Volunteers worked together to plant 41 trees in an effort to help the Worcester Tree Initiative plant 30,000 trees by 2014.

In addition, the city-wide event celebrated Worcester’s comeback from being the epicenter of an outbreak of the Asian Longhorn beetle 10 years ago that wiped out a significant number of the city’s trees.  An information fair was held prior to the event to educate the community on the benefits of trees and various local tree-planting and sustainability initiatives, followed by a recognition ceremony for Becker College, College of the Holy Cross, and Worcester State University. Local organizations, including Worcester Tree Initiative, Greener U, and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, also sponsored the event.

“Our community has faced severe weather patterns over the years that have significantly damaged some of the trees lining our campus streets,” said Becker College President Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D. “Through the Arbor Day Foundation and the Tree Campus USA program, we are able to replace many of the trees we lost, while also ensuring their health and vitality.”

“Students throughout the country are looking for opportunities to give back to their campus community and become better stewards of the environment,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Achieving Tree Campus USA status gives students that chance and sets a terrific example for other colleges and universities.”

Tree Campus USA, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Tree Campus USA is supported by a generous grant from Toyota.
