Stranger in a Strange Land: Being a Veterinarian in Public Health
Catherine M. Brown, DVM, State Public Health Veterinarian
Dr. Catherine Brown received her DVM from the University of Minnesota, completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship, then worked in a busy emergency
practice. She moved to London to earn a master of science degree in wild animal health from the Royal Veterinary College, then worked as a wildlife veterinarian from 1997-
2005. She was the staff veterinarian for DuPage County’s Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Illinois before moving to The Humane Society of the U.S. Cape Wildlife Center in
Mass., and earned a master’s of public health from Boston University. She was awarded an Applied Epidemiology Fellowship sponsored by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention with the New York State Department of Health. She has served as the state public health veterinarian at the Massachusetts Department of Public Healthsince 2006, where she oversees surveillance and educational outreach on all zoonotic and vector-borne diseases.
