Leicester Campus Work Study Positions

Federal Work-Study jobs are strictly reserved for students who receive FWS funds as part of their financial assistance packages. Earnings are paid directly to the student through bi-weekly paychecks. Students' weekly hours and wages are limited by eligibility and fund availability, and students are only compensated for hours they actually work. Students who decline FWS funds one semester are not guaranteed to receive them in the future, and may have to find jobs through Emerson Employment. Students may appeal for FWS funds in future semesters after receiving their initial financial aid packages.

Position: Kennel Work Study Student

Position Code: LVTKN

Supervisor: Kara Rudgis

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Perform daily care duties for the teaching animals that participate in the Animal Studies programs.  Duties will include, but are not limited to, direct handling of dogs and cats, cleaning animal housing, providing animals with daily enrichment and training support, and maintaining the kennel facility (general cleaning, laundry, etc) .
  • Work cohesively in a team environment to provide a high standard of care to the teaching animals.
  • Fairly fast-paced job which does not allow for much “downtime” – it will require a good deal of physical work, including repetitive mobility (bending, twisting, crouching, walking, often with a large, energetic dog on leash), some heavy lifting (<50 lb), exposure to bleach and other mild cleaning chemicals, outdoor duties in all weather conditions, and frequent multitasking in a busy environment.

Qualifications/Required Skills:

  • Our teaching animals are highly valued and cared for, so the ability to put their needs first is a must!  A calm, compassionate demeanor and a true desire to treat all of our animals with kindness and respect are qualities we seek out in incoming applications.
  • Must be willing and able to handle cats, small dogs and large dogs of various personalities in a safe, comfortable manner.
  • Abilities to follow verbal and written direction.
  • Work effectively with others and to adhere to firm schedules and protocols are necessary for this position.
  • Since our kennel operates seven days a week in all weather conditions, students are expected to have appropriate clothing (sturdy rubber-soled shoes, rain/snow boots, cold-weather attire) and transportation to and from the Leicester campus even when classes are not in session.
  • Previous experience with animals in a professional setting (boarding kennel, veterinary clinic, animal shelter, etc) is helpful but not required.
  • Above all, we are looking for gentle, dependable people who truly care about animals and want to become an integral part of our dedicated and hard-working animal care team!
  •  Students applying for this position must be enrolled in one of the Animal Studies programs (Animal Care, Veterinary Technology, Pre-veterinary Science, Veterinary Science, Laboratory Animal Management, Equine Sciences).

Number of positions available: 15

Number of work hours per week:  4-8

Anticipated work schedule:  Two 2-hour weekday shifts per week plus occasional weekend shifts. Schedule remains the same each week and could include morning, afternoon or evening hours (between 7:15 am and 8 pm). Some holiday hours may be required.

Start date: August 26, 2013

To Apply:  All students interested in a kennel work study position must submit a completed application (with a printed course schedule attached) to the veterinary clinic front desk.  Applications will be available in the veterinary clinic starting Monday August 26.  Interested students may also contact kara.rudgis@becker.edu to receive a copy of the application via email. Hiring for this position is done very quickly and positions are often filled within the first week of classes, so we would encourage submissions on Monday August 26 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Position: Dog training apartment housekeeper

Position Code: LVTDT

Supervisor: Kara Rudgis

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Responsible for weekly housekeeping in the on-campus apartment used for dog training purposes.  The apartment is just across the parking lot from the veterinary clinic.
  • Weekly duties will include, but are not limited to, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting and other general cleaning tasks.  This position would be great for a student that has a reduced work study award, or for someone who wants to work within the Animal Studies programs but whose availability does not meet the needs of the veterinary clinic or kennel.  However, if a student's work study award allows, additional hours may be filled with other tasks within the department.
  • Additional duties would be discussed directly with the hired student before they are assigned.

Qualifications/Required Skills:

  • An energetic individual who is capable of working independently and conscientiously while maintaining professional and timely communication with the department supervisor.
  • Applicants should have the ability to use basic cleaning equipment and chemicals safely, and should maintain attention to detail.  No previous housekeeping experience is required, but a willingness to responsibly complete tasks to a high standard without supervision is necessary!
  • An interest in animal care and training is a plus, as additional duties may be assigned in support of the kennel and dog training programs.
  • Students applying for this position must be enrolled in one of the Animal Studies programs (Animal Care, Veterinary Technology, Pre-veterinary Science, Veterinary Science, Laboratory Animal Management, Equine Sciences).

Number of positions available: 1

Number of work hours per week:  4-6

Anticipated work schedule:  Two or three 2-hour shifts per week; days and times are flexible and can be based on the hired student's classes and availability but once work schedule is determined, it will remain the same each week.  No weekend or holiday hours are required.

Start date: August 26, 2013

To Apply:  All students interested in this work study position should contact kara.rudgis@becker.edu to receive an application via email.  Once completed, the application may be returned via email at any time, or submitted to the veterinary clinic front desk on or after Monday August 26 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.  We would like to fill this position within the first week of classes, so we encourage any interested students to submit applications quickly.
