Becker College nursing major Becky Corbett learned about the effects of malaria in Africa and felt inspired to act. She is a malaria “griot,” or storyteller, for the ONE Campaign and Malaria No More organizations. The mission of ONE and Malaria No More is to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease across the globe. Becky volunteers to mobilize others at a grassroots level and raise awareness about the effects of malaria worldwide.
Becky also initiated a letter writing campaign to members of Congress, to ensure that funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was not cut. From there, a rally was born at which she shared the important role of U.S. contributions to international humanitarian aid efforts with the wider Becker College community. She also brought Congressman James McGovern to campus as part of the rally for awareness.
With her background in serving the global community, the nursing program at Becker College is a natural fit for Becky. She has been inspired in her life by humanitarians and those who help others. Becky is following that path. She enjoys the hospital environment, finding common ground with patients, educating them on making the right choices, and giving them a voice if they feel they do not have one.
