To Professor Daryl Statkus, learning is one continuous journey that evolves over the course of a lifetime. As an educator, she has found that students who study the humanities achieve a strong foundation in critical thinking, which can be utilized throughout their undergraduate education and beyond. In particular, she feels that exploring the works of both classic and contemporary writers enhances the college experience.
Statkus has been partial to literature and languages throughout her academic career, having earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at Worcester State College and Assumption College, respectively. Prior to joining Becker College in 1979, she taught courses in English and Effective Communications as an assistant professor at Salter College.
Statkus served as a first class petty officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for two years, an experience she found to be wonderfully rewarding. In addition to teaching courses in English Composition, Writing About Literature, Foundations of Writing, and First Year Experience at Becker, she works closely with first-year students in her role as an academic advisor.
