Dr. Calkins has been with Becker College since 1997, initially serving as an instructor of psychology and sociology until 2009. After serving three years as the assistant dean of student academic support services at Becker, Calkins was appointed associate professor of psychology. In this capacity, she is responsible for teaching psychology courses and advising psychology majors, minors, and first-year students.
Dr. Calkins is an enthusiastic, supportive teacher with a strong interdisciplinary background. While she particular enjoys teaching in her areas of specialty — social and personality psychology – she also teaches numerous other courses in the department, including introductory, experimental, and positive psychology.
Currently, Dr. Calkins is working on a college-wide general education reform project, designed to transform Becker’s general education program. The “agile mindset” curriculum takes an approach that values learning over knowing, and adaptability, to help students become entrepreneurial, lifelong learners. Calkins is enjoying the mix of research and faculty/staff development that this project entails. Finally, Dr. Calkins is also hoping to teach her upper-level seminar, “Zombie Psychology” in the upcoming academic year.
Calkins has also held teaching positions at Quinsigamond Community College, Assumption College and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and served as an educational counselor at the Colleges of Worcester Consortium.
She earned her Ed.D. in higher education research and administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, her M.A. in counseling psychology from Anna Maria College and her B.A. is psychology from Amherst College.
