Professor Scott Niemi has always had an interest in art, even as a young child. Upon graduating high school he attended Mount Wachusett Community College and earned an associate’s degree in business administration. While pursuing his love of art on an informal basis, Niemi held various jobs, but soon realized he needed to go to art school.
He completed his formal education at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, where he earned a master of fine arts in visual art, with a concentration in painting. After graduating, he worked at Florida Atlantic University as an adjunct art professor and then later for the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art in Lake Worth, Florida, as an art installer. Niemi taught as an adjunct professor at Franklin Pierce University before coming to Becker College as an adjunct professor in 2005, later advancing to a full-time assistant professor.
Niemi’s work is showcased in private collections ranging from Beverly Hills to Australia. His most famous client is Jane Erickson, the mother of John Sebastian, founder of the 1960s musical group, The Lovin’ Spoonful. His work is also displayed in eight public collections, including the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts (Plantation, Florida), The Oak Brook Bank (Oak Brook, Illinois), The Essex Inn (Chicago), and the UMass Memorial Medical Center Ambulatory Care Center (Worcester).
As an artist, Niemi enjoys the feeling of making “something from nothing.” He describes his art as “contemporary…with both representational and abstract elements, but it’s also narrative.” His hope is that he can draw the viewer into a dialogue and enjoys seeing the viewer’s interpretation without him dictating what it should be. As a teacher, he is given the opportunity to influence his students, but is also inspired by the students as he creates his artistic works.
