Bachelor of Arts in Design

Becker College has been called “a destination for game designers” by U.S.News & World Report. The College’s computer game design and development programs are among the most innovative and best in the nation, consistently ranked in the top 10 by The Princeton Review. Becker College is the only Massachusetts college to maintain a top-10 spot in The Princeton Review video game design listing for the last three years.

Students who are interested in earning a Becker College bachelor of arts degree in interactive media design and in design can choose from three areas: graphic designinterior design, and interactive media design.

The nationally recognized Becker College interactive media design program sets the standard for education in this field with its arts-based game design and programming-based game development concentrations. Consistently ranked in the top-10 schools for computer game design in the country by The Princeton Review, Becker College outperforms other large research and technical colleges and universities in this area. “Looking at the list, we feel like a David among Goliaths,” says Chair of Design Programs Paul Cotnoir in reference to the “Top 50 Game Design Schools.”

The emphasis of a Becker College education is firmly rooted in the transformative power of creative thought, inquiry, and self-discovery. The video game design program teaches its graduates not only to seek personal and professional success within the context of their chosen major, but also to contribute to a greater good in a global society. The well-documented uses of video games to teach, to heal, to create art, to entertain, to simulate, and to solve large-scale intractable problems have the power to positively transform our world. Therefore, the video game curriculum is keenly focused on creative expression, one of the College’s core values. Students learn the essentials of game design irrespective of any particular game genre, all while developing their own personal aesthetic and world view.

Across all of its design degree programs, Becker College offers small, close-knit learning experiences where professors get to know each student; faculty experts in the field; state-of-the-art equipment; and a lot of flexibility. Students graduate with a well-rounded general education foundation and the theoretical basis, technical skills, and a comprehensive portfolio upon which they can build a successful design career.
