Professor John Dorsey leads his classroom with the skill of a trial lawyer—and a dose of humor. That combination attracts students to his office for advice or animated conversations.
Through Dorsey’s guidance, students hone their skills in research, legal writing, and critical reasoning and obtain internship opportunities at local law firms. “A law degree is like no other in providing the skills and knowledge to make change and protect others,” says Dorsey, who has seen Becker College legal studies graduates attend law school—including Suffolk University, Western New England College, Roger Williams School of Law, and the New England School of Law—and end up at firms or even start their own. Legal studies graduates have also pursued careers as paralegals and in banking and social services.
Dorsey came to Becker College in 1986 as an associate professor of law after learning and teaching at the College of the Holy Cross, Assumption College, Worcester State University, and New England School of Law.
While in law school, Dorsey earned the Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Company American Jurisprudence for Excellence in the Study of Family Law Award. At Assumption College, he received an award for Excellence in Teaching in Continuing Education. As a adjunct faculty member at Anna Maria College, he received the outstanding member faculty award for the executive MBA program. In addition, he was named to Who’s Who in American Teachers in 2006 and was recognized in 2007 on the Becker Wall of Honor for his dedication and contributions to the College.
Outside of the classroom, Dorsey is one of two presidents of the Board 26 Chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials. He has also served as president of the Massachusetts Football Officials Board.
Dorsey believes it is “important for a teacher to be interesting, entertaining, and informative, and to give attention to students. The professors at Becker College are here for the students.”
