Hairdresser to Future Business Owner

For nearly 11 years, hairdresser Bledi Morava has pursued his passion for making others look and feel beautiful. Over the years he developed his expertise but realized that without having business knowledge, he could not achieve his dream to own a salon. That’s when he turned to Becker College’s Accelerated & Professional Studies Program.

“Everyone knows the importance of higher education today,” Bledi says. “I enjoy learning about the business world from our instructors—who have real-world experience—and working closely with my classmates. I have gained confidence and know that this decision will make me want to keep expanding my horizon by reading, networking, and keeping an open mind.” In May 2012, he will earn a bachelor’s degree in business management through the College’s Accelerated & Professional Studies Program.

Bledi credits encouragement from his family and friends for helping him to manage the challenge of balancing college, work, and life. He also believes in the importance of being socially responsible; he supports community causes at work and at home.

Bledi’s advice to others is: “Take advantage of Becker College and all that it offers. I only wish I had done this sooner. Time flies; you want to be on the right track when you look back at your decisions ten years from now.”

Johanna LeClair ’11

Business Management
Administrative Assistant to Development Associate

Johanna LeClair believes that “if you change one person, you change the world.” She changed the world by changing her own life, when she enrolled in the accelerated business management degree program at Becker College. An accomplished fundraiser, Johanna employs her degree, skill set, and values in her professional life and as a volunteer.

Since graduating in 2011, Johanna has been committed to making a Becker education accessible to others. To achieve this, she became involved in the Becker College Alumni Association. She now serves as president of the board and is a valuable contributor to the overall mission of the Association.

In her new position as a development associate at Brown University, Johanna builds relationships with volunteers and alumni. She has facilitated substantial contributions and has raised more than $120,000 for the Brown annual fund.

A lifelong learner, Johanna holds certifications in education, leadership, non-profit management, and fundraising. “I am proud to be able to give back and provide opportunities for people who seek to improve their lives through education,” she says.

Johanna says that her Becker education provided her with a strong sense of social responsibility. True to her belief that everyday individuals need to do something to help move closer to a better tomorrow, Johanna is active in her community. She is president of the YWCA of Greater Rhode Island board of directors. She raised significant funds for the YWCA 140th Birthday Celebration. She is also a founder and coordinator of the annual Female Face of War Conference and is a bereavement facilitator for youths.

Johanna’s advice to others: “Going back to school and working a full-time job are not easy – there were days when it seemed impossible—but it is persistence that conquers all things. Becker will provide you with the tools you need to fulfill your goals.”

Dan Champagne ’03

Lab Technician to Purchasing Agent

Like many working adults who decide to pursue a degree, Dan Champagne took college courses sporadically, part-time, as his busy schedule allowed.

That changed when he enrolled at Becker College. “In less than two years, I earned my bachelor’s degree through the Center for Accelerated & Professional Studies,” Dan says. “The accelerated schedule fit right into my lifestyle.”

Dan worked as a machine operator at local manufacturer FLEXcon, and then moved to a lab technician position before enrolling in the accelerated bachelor’s degree in business management program. The program’s manageable schedule—one night a week for five weeks—and tuition reimbursement through his employer helped him to stay focused on achieving his degree.

Dan credits his classes for challenging him to step out of his comfort zone. “It was easier to deal with management issues in the classroom environment and learn how to better handle each situation,” he explains. “I discovered that I can accomplish more than I ever expected.” He enjoyed what he calls the “family atmosphere” at Becker. He keeps in touch with his fellow 2003 graduates and with the accelerated staff who supported him throughout the program.

“My bachelor’s degree in business management has opened many doors,” he says, citing his promotion from the manufacturing floor to purchasing agent at FLEXcon. “In today’s marketplace, you are always reinventing yourself. Thanks to my bachelor’s degree from Becker College, I have found a fulfilling career in procurement that’s challenging and rewarding.”  He is a member of the Purchasing Management Association of Western New England and was recently appointed to its board of directors.

The confidence and success Dan found at Becker encouraged him to continue his education; he later earned a master’s degree in business administration. Dan’s advice to others is: “Don’t be intimidated by making a commitment to continuing your education. You will always learn something new. The group work you do in the courses can immediately be applied to the same things you deal with day-to-day in the business world. Developing these skills in the classroom makes it easier to succeed.”
