College Closure, Delayed Opening, and Class Cancellations
Becker may close the College, cancel classes, or delay opening when our region is impacted by inclement weather or other emergencies.
Official announcements about College closure, class cancellations, and delayed openings will be posted on the College’s website (www.becker.edu), disseminated to local radio and television stations, and sent out via the College’s emergency notification system, Blackboard Connect. This system uses voice, email, and text messaging to broadcast important and emergency alert messages (including College closures, cancellations, and delays in opening).
If you have not already signed up for Blackboard Connect, please do so. If you have, please make sure your emergency contact information is up-to-date. How to sign up/update information.
College employees and students are urged to use their own discretion in deciding whether they can safely commute to class or to work. If personal health or safety is at issue in that decision, responsible judgment should be used.
Closing the College
When the College is closed, College offices are closed, on-campus classes are cancelled, and College events such as athletic games and speaker events are cancelled. (All students should check Canvas for course-related announcements.)
If the College closure decision occurs after the College has already opened for the day, communications will indicate the time that each campus will close (e.g., Worcester and Leicester campuses close at 4:00 p.m.).
If the College closure decision occurs before the College has opened for the day, the announcement should normally occur by 5:30 a.m.
Delays in College Opening
The announcement for delays in Campus opening should normally occur by 5:30 a.m. Due to different class start times on the Worcester and Leicester campus, communications will indicate the specific time that each campus will open (e.g., Worcester campus opens at 10:00 a.m., Leicester campus opens at 10:30 a.m.). Communications will include information about shuttle bus service.
Cancellation of On-campus Classes
Traditional (day) and/or Accelerated (evening) classes may be cancelled. All students should check Canvas for course-related announcements. The announcement of Traditional class cancellation should normally occur by 5:30 a.m. and will include information about shuttle bus service. The announcement of Accelerated class cancellation will normally occur by 3:00 p.m.
Cancellation of on-campus classes, which assumes the College was open at the start of the day, does not necessarily mean that the College is closed. The message to the community will indicate if offices will close at the same time or at the end of a regular workday. Offices will remain open unless the message specifically states the College closing. If the College is open, College offices remain open for business.
In the event of College closure, delayed openings, and class cancellations, essential personnel must report to work/continue to stay at work unless told otherwise by their supervisor.
Emergency Notification System, via Blackboard Connect
Becker uses the Blackboard Connect emergency notification system to inform faculty, staff and students about emergency conditions on campus as well as changes due to inclement weather. The speediest way to find out when campus will be closed, opening delayed, or classes cancelled is to update your contact information in Becker’s emergency notification system, Blackboard Connect.
To ensure that you receive emergency notifications, please make sure that you have registered and/or updated your emergency contact information on Insite. At a minimum, you should enter your mobile phone number in the “Primary Crisis Contact Number” area.
To register or update your information:
- Go to https://insite.becker.edu and click the Log In button.
- Click Insite for Employees or Insite for Students, as appropriate (Enter your network username and password. Username and password are the same as your CURRENT e-mail/campus login.)
- Click the Crisis Contact Information link. Enter your cell phone number in the “Primary Crisis Contact Number” field.
- If you would like to enter a home or secondary number, enter it in the “Other Crisis Contact Number” field.
- Click Submit when done.
Note: Standard or other messaging charges apply depending upon your wireless carrier plan and subscription details. The system also sends a test notification each semester.
Parking can be problematic during winter months because of municipal parking bans and restrictions.* Please make note of this important information about parking in Becker lots and on public streets, below.
Parking in Becker College Parking Lots
Becker College offers parking on both campuses. Designated parking areas can be viewed at:
Campus Police provides additional information about parking; click here.
Additional Winter Parking for Becker College faculty, staff, and students

Parking on Public Streets in Worcester
The City of Worcester has specific winter parking ban restrictions designed to keep streets open, safe and essential traffic moving during inclement weather. These can be street specific and failure to follow Parking Ban restrictions may result in ticketing for violation and/or towing of your vehicle at the owner's expense.
