Reporting a Sexual Assault

If a student or employee has been sexually assaulted by another student or college community member and is considering using the campus conduct system, she/he is encouraged to discuss the matter with the vice president of student affairs, located in the Office of Student Affairs, or the associate vice president of human resources, located in the Business Office. This provides the student or employee with the opportunity to review campus conduct procedures, but does not obligate the student or employee to pursue action.

If you are the victim of a sexual assault at Becker College, your first priority is to get to a place of safety. You should then obtain necessary medical treatment. The Becker College Police Department strongly advocates that a victim of sexual assault report the incident in a timely manner; time is a critical factor for evidence collection and preservation. An assault should be reported directly to a Becker College police officer or a student affairs representative. Filing a police report with a Becker College police officer will not obligate the victim to prosecute, nor will it subject the victim to scrutiny or judgmental opinions from officers.

Filing a report will:

  • Ensure that a victim of sexual assault receives the necessary medical treatment and tests, at no expense to the victim.
  • Provide the opportunity for collection of evidence helpful in prosecution, which cannot be obtained later. (Ideally, a victim of sexual assault should not wash, douche, use the toilet, or change clothing prior to a medical/legal exam).
  • Ensure access to free confidential counseling from counselors specifically trained in the area of sexual assault crisis intervention.

When a sexual assault victim contacts the Becker College Police Department, the appropriate investigatory agency will be notified. The Worcester Police Department Detective Division Assault Team is the primary investigatory agency for this type of crime in the city of Worcester. In the town of Leicester, the primary investigatory agency is the Leicester Police Department Detective Division. A representative from the Office of Student Affairs will also be notified.

Becker College will assist victims in every way possible to restore their sense of empowerment and personal safety. This includes, at a minimum, arranging for changes in class schedules and living situations subsequent to an alleged sexual assault, to the extent that they are reasonably available. Additionally, Becker College representatives will guide the victim through the available options and support the victim in their decision.

Becker College strives to provide an environment that is free from violent acts. Violations of the College’s sexual assault policy will result in disciplinary action, which may include removal from the College, prosecution in state courts, and expulsion from Becker College, even for a first offense.

In accordance with the requirements of the Student Right-To-Know and Campus Security Act, in any campus conduct case alleging some form of sexual assault, the accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunity to have others present during disciplinary proceedings, and both will be informed of the outcome.

Students and employees are reminded that this is not something they have to go through alone. A friend or support person can be with a student or employee during all police interviews
