Jurisdiction & Authority
The Becker College Police Department is staffed by trained and licensed special state police officers, with full police powers under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 22C, Section 63, as well as trained security officers. Under this chapter and section, college police officers have special state police powers on land and buildings owned, used, or leased by the institution. These police officers have full police status on campus, with the authority to make arrests. Additionally, the Becker College Police Department is required by the College administration to enforce all College rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Becker College also employs supplemental security officers. These security officers have full enforcement authority for violations of Becker College policy; however, they do not have statutory arrest powers.
All Becker College police officers receive training in basic law enforcement from the Massachusetts State Police Training Division and Municipal Police Training Committee. They also receive annual in-service training to stay informed of current laws and procedures. In addition to annual CPR and first aid/first responder certifications, a number of the Becker College police officers receive a variety of specialized training and certifications in order to better serve the College community.
